Enjoy a summer in a world of yellow at the Kiyose Sunflower Festival
The Kiyose Sunflower Festival is held every summer in Kiyose City, Tokyo, and boasts one of the largest sunflower fields in Tokyo, making it a “spectacular summer spot. About 100,000 sunflowers bloom simultaneously at the festival site, and the spectacle is so powerful that you will want to keep snapping your shutter. Although the site is easily accessible from central Tokyo, the yellow world that fills your field of vision gives you a sense of scale, as if you were standing on the land of Hokkaido. As you walk into the field, you will be surrounded by sunflowers as tall as you are, and you will feel as if you were lost in a sunflower maze. We recommend using a wide-angle lens to capture the dynamic expanse of the sunflowers, or moving closer to a single flower to capture its expressive appearance. During backlit hours, the petals will shine through the light, making the sunflowers appear to glow, creating a fantastic photo opportunity. Please note that you cannot take photos early in the morning or in the evening, as admission is only permitted during the opening hours of the gate.
Key points for photography
The key to photographing the Kiyose Sunflower Festival is to use a wide-angle lens to emphasize the scale of the field by including a large portion of the sky, and to create a composition with depth by shooting from a backlit position to capture the moment when the petals are transparent and taking advantage of the pathway.
