Over 1 million sunflowers in a sea of yellow at the Mashiko Sunflower Field
The Mashiko Sunflower Field is one of the most spectacular summer spots in Tochigi Prefecture. In mid-August, when the sunflowers are at their best, more than 1 million sunflowers fill the vast area, and the vivid contrast between the blue sky and the golden flowers is overwhelming to visitors. The cluster of sunflowers that stretches to the end of the field of view is so large in scale that it seems as if it is surrounded by a sea of yellow, a scene that leaves a strong impression upon the first sight.
Key points for photography
The key to photographing the Mashiko sunflower field is to use a wide-angle lens to emphasize a sense of scale by capturing the sunflowers stretching all the way to the horizon, and to express the summer glow by composing the image with a large blue sky and aiming for backlighting at the time of day when the petals are transparent.
