Mount Half Moon Observatory

Mount Half Moon Observatory

From the Hangetsu parking lot to the observatory, enjoy the panoramic view of Oku-Nikko

The parking lot for Hangetsuyama appears at the end of the Chuzenji-ko Skyline by car. A short walk up the mountain will take you to the Hangetsuyama Observatory, which boasts one of the best views in Nikko. From the observatory, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Hatchodeshima Island jutting out into Lake Chuzenji below, the majestic Mt. It is as if you are floating in mid-air, and you can enjoy a panoramic view of Oku-Nikko's natural beauty that changes with the seasons. The driving route also offers beautiful scenery of the lake and mountains, and the view from the car window is not to be missed. Especially during the season of autumn leaves, the mountainsides turn red and golden, symbolizing the autumn in Nikko. For those who enjoy hiking, the route from the first parking lot of Mount Hangetsu to the observatory is recommended. There is also a route from the top of the mountain via the Hangetsu Pass down to Mujikubo on the shore of Lake Chuzenji, which is a popular walking route that allows visitors to fully enjoy the nature of Oku-Nikko even in a short time.

Key points for photography

The key to taking photographs is to take advantage of the wide field of view from the observatory and to be conscious of the composition of Lake Chuzenji, Hacchodeshima, and Nantai-san as a whole. The oblique light in the morning and evening creates shadows on the surface of the lake, resulting in a photograph with a three-dimensional effect. Adjusting the proportion of the sky and incorporating the expression of the clouds will further emphasize the sense of scale. During the fall foliage season, the colors of the mountains should take center stage, with the lake in the foreground to create depth. During the driving season, stopping the car in a safe place and framing the scene through the car window can help you capture the dynamic scenery typical of Oku-Nikko.
