Ice Pillars in Onouchi Valley

Ice Pillars in Onouchi Valley

Onouchi Canyon's icicles are an attractive winter photo spot with a suspension bridge and bird's eye view composition.

The icicles of Onouchi Gorge are a must-see winter photo spot. The entire canyon is covered in ice, and combined with the natural terrain, the view is as if you have wandered into a world of ice. Particularly impressive is the suspension bridge over the canyon. The composition looking down from the bridge allows you to capture the density of icicles, the depth of the canyon, and the difference in elevation in a single photo. The wide-angle mode of a smartphone is also sufficient to create a sense of scale, which is a unique attraction of this location.

Key points for photography

The key to taking pictures is to incorporate the suspension bridge over the canyon into the composition and take advantage of the viewpoint looking down from above. Shooting from above the suspension bridge makes it easy to capture the density of the icicles, the depth of the canyon, and the difference in elevation in a single shot, and even the wide-angle mode of a smartphone is sufficient to capture the full force of the scene. Since ice tends to be white, a slightly underexposed image will bring out the texture and three-dimensionality of the ice. Aiming for the right moment when water is spraying on the ice will add a splash of water and give a sense of movement and realism to an otherwise static scene of ice.
