Aloe flower

Aloe flower

If you are looking for a unique subject in winter and early spring, photographing aloe flowers is highly recommended. The flower stalks that grow out from between the thick leaves and the tubular flowers that turn red or orange have a strong presence, making a simple background a good subject for a picture. The clear winter light makes the colors of the flowers more vivid, and when combined with a blue sky, the ocean, or a dark background, it creates a striking contrast. Aiming for backlighting will bring out the outlines of the flowers, while pulling back a little to capture the shape of the leaves will give the aloe a powerful appearance. This is a subject that is best photographed in the season when flowers are scarce, and should be included as a subject with a sense of the season.
